Being a single mom isn’t easy, but there are so many things that make the struggles worth it. The holiday season is the perfect time to reflect on all the reasons being a single mom is so special, and it’s an experience that yields plenty to be thankful for.
The Freedom
When you have a partner, you have to consult with them on just about every decision when it comes to raising your children. When you’re a single mom, the day-to-day decision making is up to you, and it actually makes things way more enjoyable. If you want to serve up cereal for dinner, there’s no one judging you for not putting a five-course meal on the table because guess what- kids love cereal for dinner! Having that freedom to literally do what you want, when you want makes this whole single mom thing kind of fun.
The Extra Snuggles
You don’t have to share those precious little kid snuggles with anyone else- well, except maybe the dog. They’re only this little for so long, and each cuddle is one step closer to the day they no longer think it’s cool to hang with mom. Being a single mom allows you to savor those cuddly moments with your little one even more.
The Strength
Life as a single mom will give you strength you didn’t even know was possible. You can take hit after hit, day after day, and it barely even phases you. You’ve made it through so many hard days already, almost nothing scares you anymore. You never would have found that inner strength if you hadn’t become a single mom.
The Connection
When you’re raising a child on your own, there’s a different kind of connection that develops between you and your child. Think of that feeling of holding your newborn baby for the first time, but then magnify it by a thousand. You and your children are doing this life together. You know that whatever happens, you have each other. You learn things about each other that you never would have if you weren’t raising them on your own, and it builds a bond that can never be broken.
The Pride
You’re doing this on your own! That’s something to be proud of. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and here you are, rocking it solo. Not everyone has the strength to do that. It’s something to seriously be proud of. When you watch your child grow into a responsible, capable, and loving adult, you’ll be the one that can take all the credit for it. No one else can take that from you.
The Lessons
You learn a lot about yourself when you’re a single mom. You’re challenged in ways you never thought possible, and there are days when you fall short. Those days are hard, but they also bring about some very important lessons. When you take those lessons and turn them into something positive, that’s when you find out what it really means to be a single mom.
The Love
Love is what makes the world go ‘round, and you will never find a greater love than the love between a single mom and her children. All you have is each other, and that makes the love you share deeper than anything you could have ever imagined. It’s you and your littles against the world, and that’s something to be celebrated not only during the holiday season, but every day of the year.
There are days as a single mom when you’ll be knocked so far back, you’ll wonder how you’ll ever climb back up again. Then, a new day comes and you somehow muster up the strength to do it all again, but this time you have the lesson from the day before to make you wiser and stronger. That’s something to be thankful for. Being a single mom is something to be thankful for.
